Black Rapid RS-4 Strap – Hands On

Written by Jared Polin

I asked Rob to demonstrate the black rapid RS-4 camera strap. I honestly do not think I would use something like this. I move around a lot and don’t like things getting in the way or possibly bouncing off of things. I don’t like how your equipment is free to basically bounce off your side or anything you run into.

But I wanted you to see how it worked because maybe it is something that you could find useful.

Let me know what you think of these in store reviews. Do you like them hate them or find them useful, please leave comments.

This is a $54 on amazon and b and h

I’ve used the strap for years and whe you have to juggle kids and your camera there is no better strap out there. I thoroughly enjoy it

Thanks Fro for the great videos

Good call, for every day shooting and juggling of kids that defiantly makes sense. What equipment do you hand from it?

I’ve been shooting with the Black Rapid RS-5, not sure on the difference it looks the same. I have to say it made me nervous at first. I still always have the thought of it coming off in the back of my mind. However after almost 4 months of everyday use, it works. I almost always have my hand resting on it to keep from swinging around to much but if you wear it enough, it becomes natural to work with.

    @jared

so what do you use to ensure your camera is secure in case it slips or something? the standard neck strap?

also, when you’re not using your camera do you just store it in your shoulder bag?

Wouldn’t work so well for me. Most of my photography involves scrambling up rock debris, sidling through junipers and big stands of sage, or perching on canyon walls. Too much swing would either knock into things, get tangled up in branches, or affect my balance up high.

sounds like i should try it, maybe.

I use the basic strap that the camera came with but most of the time it is not around my neck. I am not a big fan of the camera over the shoulder and hanging on my back especially when moving I don’t want to bounce it around.

When I am not using it I have it in one hand possibly with the strap wrapped around it or back int he bag.

I’ve taken my 7d and 1dMkII to South Africa and Ecuador on my R-straps. They are great for travel because walking around with the Canon Hebrew National (70-200 2.8) all day can really hurt your neck. I find it works better on lenses with tripod mounts than on the body itself.

You do have to be careful sometimes to not bang it, but for the most part it hasn’t been a big issue.

Man… as tall as he is, and it’s still hanging below his butt. That’s a hella long strap. Not sure I could deal with it, either.

  10. Anthony says:

I’ve use the RS-7 and DR-1 Double straps. AMAZING!!!!
@lenstewart: get the BRAD stabilizer strap! locks the camera to your body, great for running around; I use it while rock climbing!
    So does this guy: http://www.blackrapid.com/buzz/1013/
