5 Min Portrait – Baby Billy Candid Photos
I know this is not exactly like the other 5 min portraits but I felt it was worthy of the title 5 Min Portrait.
I went over to my friend Bill and Casey’s house to see their 10 week old newborn Billy. I did shoot video of the entire thing but felt that it was not strong enough to cut together this time around.
You will hear me explain the situaiton in the video below how Billy fell asleep right when we started which made it pretty hard to get interesting pictures. Following getting some ok pictures I sat down with Bill to discuss what we learned form the session and how it did not go exactly as we had hoped. You will see that at the very end of the video.
What saved the day after I packed up, was when Billy got fed he came alive which made for some great photos. There is a nice mix between baby pictures, family pictures and my favorite type of photos, candid images. I love the interaction between Bill photographing his son and how you can see the joy in little Billy’s face and eyes.
Below you will find all the edited images from the photo shoot. I hope you like the new split angles that I tried in this video. If you have any questions feel free to leave them below in the Facebook comment box.

5 Min Portrait #001 – With Outtakes
Welcome to the very first 5 Min Portrait VIDEO. What I discovered in the first 5 min is that it may be a little tough to stick to the 5 Min time frame when trying to set up, direct the subject and try to get useful images. There is a pretty good chance that I will go beyond the 5 min on these types of shoots.
The idea behind this first portrait session was to get some nice portraits of Dave in a terrible lighting situation of a bowling alley. In the future I will venture into off camera flash for similar shoots to this. (Click Here to see video of me photographing bowling action)
The whole idea of these videos which I will try and produce as often as possible is to let you get a feel for how I work during a photo shoot. You will get to see how I direct the subject, how I frame and compose the images as well as where I move to find the image. As I take the images you will get a chance to see that shot pop up on the screen with all the shooting data imprinted in the corner.
This is obviously a staged photo shoot where I am directing the subject and looking to capture a particular type of image. I will also be capturing video of my more candid photo shoots. The candid photo shoots will probably have less talking as I will be focused on capturing the subject at hand. For example if I am working with a musician you will see and hear my interactions.
During the bowling photo shoot I used the Nikon D3s along with the Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS and Sigma 85 1.4 lenses.
Don’t forget to watch until the end for some really FUN OUTTAKES. Click more to see the photos from this shoot.

I get asked quite often at events to take portraits of people. Usually someone needs an image for their web site, product or even profile picture for linkedin and Facebook.
This is where I came up with the 5 minute portrait idea. In all honesty I usually spend that amount of time capturing a few different looks for the subject and as soon as I get that killer shot we wrap it up.
You will see that you wont always be shooting in the best environments but you should be able to find a cool location to photograph. With Janice aka Mommy Blogger we pretty much shot her photos in a parking lot that so happened to have a small lot of tress. Win’s photos were taken in a long hallway at a Las Vegas hotel that had 100 yards of floor to celling windows. You will be able to find good places to shoot where ever you are.
This is a preview post for the 5 min portrait which I will capture video and audio of me directing and capturing the photos. You will get to see how I interact with the subjects and get a feel for how I get them to relax as well as pose. In the end we will have a nice selection of images to process and than deliver.
