Nikon 16-35 f4 Un-Boxing and Sample Images

Jared Polin May 31, 2010 5

I had a chance to un box this new nikon vr lens.  As you all know I am not the biggest fan of f4 lenses nor do I think VR is needed in wide angle.  Sure some people say you can use the VR for video but I did not notice much of a difference with it on when i made a sample video.

The lens to me is a nice size, much smaller and lighter than the 24-70 2.8 but that is expected.  Ive read that one certain internet reviewer guy who will remain nameless said that this lens is still a little big, hes just crazy and not a pro.

Sure the lens is sharp and all but its not a 2.8. It just feels like the images dont pop as much from it.  It also looks like i am getting some vignetting when wide open at 16.  I love my 14-24 and will continue to say thats the way to go.  It is more expensive and you cant use regular filters on it but it is amazing at 14 where this 16 is less than amazing at 16.

So there you have it, spend the extra bucks for the 2.8 I think you will be happier.

Jared can’t wait to finish the sniff test to move on to do a sniff test of that pretty hot girl!!!! thats ok we will wait for the video on that review!!

About the lens I also feel like having f4 is not as good as having an f2.8 is there any reason why a lens with f4 is worth buying over an f2.8 (glass quality, etc)??????

Would you do a sniff test on a conon 10-22mm i thing it is f3.5-5.6 I’m using a canon 7d and I want to get a wide angle and your input would be very much welcome.
    Thank you so much Jared

The 16-35 appears to be the direction of Nikon’s (future) prevailing winds, which isn’t bad – just an adjustment for we traditionalists who loved to sniff emulsion. I purchased the 14-24 a year ago, even though I’d been waiting for an update to the 17-35. Six months later – bam! We get the VR 4. All I can say is that my 14-24 provides a sharpness that is rare for 35 gear. Filters have become about as passe as film.

To your followers: So many are dumping their heretofore must-have 14-24′s that they can be had at about the same figure as the plastic 16-35. Either is great, but one is now a much better deal. I’m not parting with my 14-24, either.

    Thanks Fro.
