Photo of the Week – Of Camera Flash

Jared Polin September 27, 2010 6

This weeks photo of the week focuses on an image that was captured using one off camera flash. I go into the very basics of how and where we set the flash for this image to show you the dimension that it creates.

You can see how thick the final image is in terms of contrast and tone which is something I look for in my final images.

Greg and I are working on a full Flash Curriculum that will take us from the very basics of understand flash photography to full studio set ups.

Great vid, interesting to hear your explanation of what you have done in the pp too.

    Myself I prefer the B&W option setting the values to 78 / 22 / 0 / 0 which gives it a very TMAXy feel to it… IMHO.

Looking forward to the tutorial of camera flash off the camera ;-/

I am interested in finding out why are a lot of the shots with high ISO values? I thought the goal was to use the lowest ISO to get better detail. Specially using a flash would that not help? I noticed it on quite a few of the fro photos.

    Hey Jared,

how is your “general sharpening” preset setup?

    Ike,
The high ISO values are to let more ambient light in to balance out the light from the flash. Check out this other FroKnows video tutorial:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzliksKaNyM&feature=player_embedded
