This weeks photo of the week again is from my trip to SXSW with the band SINAI. It is a right of passage when touring with a band to stop at every Waffle House you see. Ok maybe not every Waffle House you see but just a few.
At the first Waffle House we stopped out the whole Crew took up tables on one side of the place. As you will see in the video one of my personal favorite photos I have captured of a band was from the last time I went to SXSW. I knew when everyone sat down that the perfect shot was gong to be a shot with the D3s and Nikon 14-24 2.8. That lens is just perfect for getting everything I want in a scene along with showing massive amounts of detail.
You will see how I edited this photo in the video below in Adobe Lightroom 3.
I am GIVING AWAY a poster print of this photo thanks to AdoramaPix. What I am looking for you to do is critique this photo of mine on the Fro facebook fan page CLICK HERE I am not looking for something that says “I like it” “I dont like it” I want you to critique it, what do you like or dislike. I will be picking one person to win a 24×36 signed print.

you said something very interesting today as always, you talked about processing for printing. I would like to see a tutorial about that, in colors and b&w. What is the difference between processing for a scream or doing it for printing?
Not that I don’t love Greg but as a band picture I’d wanna see just them. With Greg in the photo I like its more of a documenting life on the road while documenting a band on the road kind of thing.
Mostly, it may seem pointless but I love the look of the floor. It pops!
Dear Mr. Fro.
) edit this raw??? please…?
I like this picture but think that the top half is a little is too bright and you loose the lamps (which would look nice on the photo). Would a graduated filter help to make the top a little darker but keeping the rest as is? Just sayin’.
Would you let us (your annoying followers
Hi Jared,
I’m from Brasil and really like your style, work and website.
When I started watching this video I was wondering how did he get so much in focus with a wide aperture such as 2.8. Then as you were reading my mind you just answered! Thank you very much for your lessons.
P.S.: I started shooting raw because of you, before knowing you, I was shooting jpeg, because I didn’t know much and I read about it on the “KR” website. I shoot with a D90 and I have the kit lens (18-105), a Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8D and a Nikkor 60mm AFS Micro 2.8G.
I first heard about you through the interview with Jimmy Beltz and now I follow your website too. Why there is no image on the Itunes podcast?
Beautiful B&W photo, that 14-24 is very sharp, although has a ugly geometry distortion.
LR has some lens’ profile to correct just that. Why not, Fro?
Don’t use facebook so i’ll comment about your image here if that’s ok ?
Nice image, the things I’d change?…
I would have cropped it in the viewfinder differently, I’d have moved down a tiny bit which would have taken out the vent/smoke alarm on the ceiling and included more of the patterned floor.
I’d also have turned left slightly, that way the four lights would have been centred which I think would look beter, and the chair on the left wouldn’t have been chopped in half, the cropping of the bench on the right wouldn’t have mattered.
Anyway, it’s a good image…thanks for your thoughts about it.
Bring down highlights a little and i feel like the lonesome chair to the left is a bit unnecessary. Also some detail seems to have been lost with the high contrast.
I think this photos is really a great image that captures the behind the scenes-ness of the band that you would not usually see. I really like the contrast in the image, and the composition draws your eye to the people sitting at the table. but the only thing that bothers me is the lights are slightly blown out, but that can be fixed with a little bit of burning in cs5. Great image otherwise. Always have been a fan of you’re enviromental / music photos. Constant inspiration to improve my my work. Keep up the great stuff jared.
Really like the distortion in this photo. Love the way the flooring radiates outward. Though I know it is your style, it may be a little too dark. Great shot though and I would love to hang it on my wall.
Well looking at the photo i say its a bit freaky because in the picture there is a fat guy with a camera taking a picture of people having dinner. Maybe he is a serial killer, so do i win my print now?
I have been a fro knows photo follower since it was jaredpolin.com and I totally respect what you do with your contrast. but this picture is really over the top and feel like you loose detail. While it is a good photo I don’t think it should have been photo of the week due to us all not being able to shoot something like this and not being able to relate to it. But hey, its just my opinion.
Great shot, and i do the same thing when i edit photos, i think how is this going to look printed. Seeing a beautiful print makes it worth it.
@ EDU:
I Like this geometry distortion, i think it’s a entire part of creativity. When you mount a ultra Wide Angle on your camera, i think you must compose, think and create your photo with this Geometry distortion.
All ultra wide lenses have great visible geometry distortion, why correct it ?
Well, the basis is good, I would probably make more out of the top and back part. The lights are to much overexposed a I think little bit of masking in Lightroom or ACR would help. Not to much time consuming and no need go to PS. Send me the RAW a and will prove you my words, maybe I can find some more problems, cos this low-res image doesnt show everything…
I hope I’m allowed to give you my critique right here in the comment section.
What I like is that you’ve chosen to turn it into B&W as it gives the photo more impression.
Personally I would have zoom in a little so that the left part with the empty chair, the first lamp and a part of the ceiling would be cut out of the picture.
Of course I mean that B&W makes the picture more impressive. Sorry, I’m not a native English speaker.
Jared,
You mentioned large size printing- can you recommend any specific outfits that do nice printing at 40″x60″ or above sizes?
