Should your camera shoot without a card?

Jared Polin July 30, 2010 5

This is a tip for everyone with a DSLR. One of the first settings you should change in the camera even before you set it to RAW is to turn on the CARD LOCK in the menu. What this is doing is making sure that you do not shoot any pictures without a memory card in the camera. You would think it defaults to this but for some reasons it doesn’t.

I learned my lesson very early on when shooting film when I forgot to load a roll of film and started to shoot. I probably took about 20 shots before I realized I did not have film in the camera. So do yourself a favor and LOCK that bad boy up so you don’t make the same mistakes I did!!!

I think we have all done that at one time, especially in film. I have all my cameras now set that it will not shoot without a memory card in. Good reminder!

I have done the film once as well. I did not forget to load the film, I just did not make sure that the film mas on the take up spool ha ha ha! 30 some photos in and I was like WTF how many exposures am I getting on this roll?! Checked it and I saw my mistake. Lets just say I was very embarrassed. The model, well she was none to happy ether.

With digital I have yet to have that happen as I keep the lock on, even when shooting tethered.

Glad you liked airsoft, it is a lot of fun:)

It’s a lot similar to “always save your work” on the computer, especially in the Fortunately, forgetting to put on media hasn’t happened to me on a camera yet. FYI, my D5000 is defaulted to LOCK.

That feature is only there for use in camera sales. So the sales people can demo a camera without a card. In the real world just keep the lock on, no worries.
