We made the trip out to Las Vegas for CES 2016 because Nikon said we will not want to miss the show. Turns out they were correct. Nikon announced not one DSLR in the way of the D5 but a surprise to the world in the way of the D500. We discus everything that happened in Las Vegas from encountering hookers to running into Shaq again and all the fun toys from CES.

Samsung’s Pocket-Sized SSD Now Offers 2 TB of Storage

Samsung announced the 2nd version of their pocket SSD, which now includes up to 2TB of storage, up from 1TB last year. The new portable SSD T3 drive is the size of a credit card, coming in at just 2.9 x 2.3 inches, and weighing just 1.8 oz. The drive is fast too, utilizing Samsung’s V-NAND and SSD TurboWrite technologies, which gives it read/write speeds of up to 450MB/s. It’s also super rugged: it has a shock-resistant metal case, the ability to withstand 1500G of force, drops of up to 2 meters, and resistance against overheating in extreme temperatures. The new drive will hit stores next month with final pricing not yet determined. Check out the official product video below:

Zeiss Unveils Set of iPhone Camera Lenses

Another small product from CES: Zeiss has announced new “high-performance lenses” for iPhone cameras which set “a new quality standard.” They’ve teamed up with Fellowes Brands, a manufacturer of premium mobile photography accessories, to create the lenses. There are three lenses in the lineup so far: wide angle, telephoto and macro, which will feature optics from Zeiss and the lens itself by ExoLens. All lenses incorporate Zeiss’ T*® antireflective coating, which minimizes reflections at the glass-to-air surfaces and improves the transmission of light. Users will need an ExoLens bracket to hold and mount the lens to the iPhone camera. The bracket comes with a screwthread for the lens, a cold shoe, and a 1/4-inch tripod mount. The lenses will be available starting in the Q2 of 2016 and will be compatible with iPhone 6 models and up. Click here to view sample images taken with the lenses.

Nikon Reveals D500: a DX Body with Pro Features

Nikon surprised us all this week by announcing the D500 at CES. The DX body, which is the official successor of the popular D300s, packs a ton of pro features in it. Top specs include a 20.9MP CMOS sensor, Nikon’s new Expeed 5 processor, and a native ISO range of 100-51,200 (expandable up to 1,640,000 ISO). The new body also shoots 10FPS, has 153 AF points which fill the frame inside the viewfinder, has a new buffer that can store 79 14-bit RAW photos at a single time, and the same weather-sealing as the D810. It also is Bluetooth-enabled so you can pair it with your smartphone using their updated SnapBridge technology, or users can simply use the built-in WiFi or NFC. Meanwhile, it has a touchscreen tilting LCD, and one XQD and one SD memory slot. Not enough for you? It can also shoot 4K video at 30fps (that’s UHD 4K, not DCI) and 1080P at 60P with a max recording time of 29:59. It’ll be available in March starting at about $2,000. Nikon Announces New Flagship DSLR: The D5

Moving on to its big brother, Nikon also announced the D5, its latest flagship DSLR. Main specs include a 20.8MP full frame sensor with an Expeed 5 processor, and a native ISO of 100-102,400 (expandable up to 3,280,000 ISO). It can shoot 12fps (14 with mirror lockup), with the extended buffer being able to store up to 200 shots of 14-bit lossless RAW plus JPEG fine as well. It also has the 153 AF points (99 being cross-type), which comes with its own dedicated AF processor–Nikon’s first DSLR with that. Next, it has a 3.2-inch touchscreen (which only activates when focusing in live view and image review), it’ll shoot 4K video at 30P (again UHD, not DCI) for a max shooting time of 3-min for a single clip. And finally, the D5 will come in two different versions: one with a pair of XQD card slots, or one with two CF card slots. You can get your hands on one this March for $6,500. Nikon Announces 360-Degree 4K-Ready Waterproof Action Camera

Another Nikon announcement: a new 360-degree action cam called the KeyMission 360. Not too much has been revealed about this upcoming camera. What is known is how it looks: it features two lenses, one on the front and one on the back. We’re told it shoots 4K 360 video and is waterproof down to 100 feet and is also dust and shock resistant. It features electronic VR too for minimal camera shake. Check out sample footage shot by Corey Rich below along with our preview video. The camera will come out this Spring at an “affordable price.”

Kodak Is Bringing Back Their Super 8 Camera, with Digital Features

Kodak is officially bringing back their Super 8 camera, but with digital features–calling it an “Analog Renaissance.” Kodak says, “There are some moments that digital just can’t deliver, because it doesn’t have the incomparable depth and beauty of film. These moments inspired Kodak to design a new generation of film cameras.” The new camera has a 3.5-inch swiveling digital viewfinder, however it’s only for previewing. Those shots are captured on Super 8 Kodak film, with each film cartridge containing 50 feet of film (~3 minutes of recording time at 24fps). It also has a fixed 6mm Ricoh lens (or you can get an optional 6-48mm zoom lens), it shoots in 9, 12, 18, 24, or 25 framerates, has a built-in light meter, cartridge detection, exposure control, manual speed/iris setting, USB port for battery charging and more. Once users are finished filming, you send it back to Kodak, which will process it, scan it, and deliver it back to you as a digital copy and as an 8mm film that you can use in projectors. However it comes at a price: processing and digitizing a film cartridge will cost around $50 to $75. It’ll be available this Fall with pricing not yet announced. Kodak CEO Jeff Clarke suggests it’ll be around $400-$750. (via PP)

Parrot Showcases New Fixed-Wing Drone at CES

Parrot has announced their new fixed-wing drone called the Disco. The airplane-looking drone can fly up to 50mph for up to 45 minutes, due to how light it is. It also sports a 14MP camera on its nose with a 3-axis digital stabilization system. Controlling the drone is done via Wi-Fi and a Skycontroller or their Flight Plan app. It also has a new “autopilot” mode, along with removeable wings for easy transportation. Parrot says, “This will be the first ‘ready-to-fly’ wing-shaped drone, and the first everyone can easily pilot. Just mount the wings to the body and throw it in the air. No piloting skills are required.” The Disco will be available later this year; check out a preview video of it in action below in the meantime:

This Working “Paper” Camera is Only 6mm Thick

There’s a new paper-thin camera called the “Paper Like a Digital Camera” weighing in at only 1.5 oz. The paper camera has minimal components sandwhiched inside, making it only 6mm thick. It has an LED light for indicating battery level and shooting mode, a mode button for toggling between photo/video/voice, a microSD card slot for storage (up to 16GB), and a USB terminal for transferring images. Quality-wise, it only has a 1.3MP sensor. It also shoots videos at 480P at 30fps and can record sounds in MP3 format. Apple Announces FREE 1-Hour Photo Workshops

Apple has announced that they will be offering FREE 1 hour photo workshops in the stores. The workshops will start sometime this month and are part of a new campaign titled “Start Something New.” There will be three different workshops offered: iPhone Photography, iPhone Videography, and Perfect Your Photos on Mac. They say, “We’ll teach you how to shoot photos more creatively and help you try out various accessories and techniques—like long exposure for light trails, using Time-lapse to show progression, or getting up close with nature using a macro lens. Then, we ‘ll explore artistic ways to adjust and edit your photos, so you can create a work of art, find your style, or just improve your skills.” Check your local store’s website for its workshop schedule if you’re interested in attending one. Phase One Unveils 100MP Sensor for their XF Cameras

Another big product announcement from last week: Phase One has revealed their new 100MP full frame medium format CMOS sensor for their XF cameras. Calling it “The ultimate camera system,” the new sesnor was developed in partnership with Sony, which they say is a system that was “engineered to perform well beyond 100MP imaging.” Spec-wise, it features true 16-bit color, 15 stops of dynamic range, live view capturing with HDMI output, a native ISO range of 50-12800, and exposure times of up to an hour. Judge Rules Naruto Can’t Own Selfie Photo

It looks like the legal battle between PETA and David Slater is now over. U.S. District Judge William Orrick says he plans to dismiss the case, ruling that a monkey cannot own the copyright to photos. Orrick says, “I just don’t see that it could go as broadly as beyond humans.” He notes that federal copyright law doesn’t allow animals to hold copyrights. However, even though Judge Orrick plans on dismissing the case, he has given PETA permission to file an amended lawsuit, and the animal rights group says they plan to do just that…Naruto, there’s still a chance! Photographer Suing Richard Prince & Gallery for Using His Photo

A photographer named Donald Graham is suing Richard Prince for copyright infringement. Prince held an exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery in NYC where the photo in question was displayed. Graham says he’s not only suing Prince, but also the gallery. The photo, titled “Rastafarian Smoking a Joint,” is just that: a B&W image of a Rastafarian man lighting a marijuana joint. According to the suit, Graham spent two weeks trekking the mountains of Jamaica in May of 1996, with his photo equipment and mobile studio “in order to capture photographs of the Rastafarian people in their surrounding environment.” He later copyrighted the series, including the work in question. The complaint says that the the copyrighted photograph had been used with the original image “fully intact,” with only minor changes made to the work, such as cropping and putting it into an Instagram format. The lawsuit comes after Graham and his lawyers initially sent a cease and desist letter to both Gagosian and Prince following the exhibition. (via AN)

Lexar Releases World’s Fastest MicroSD Card

Lexar has announced the World’s fastest MicroSDXC card. The new card, coming in at 1800x with a max read speed of 270 mb/s, comes in 32, 64, and 128GB configurations. Starting at about $60, the new card is available now.
