Terrible News about SIGMA 70-200 2.8

Jared Polin March 7, 2011 55

This news SHOCKED me and was totally unexpected!!! I saw someone tweet me that the Sigma 70-200 2.8 version 2 is no longer $799 and I had to do some checking myself. It is true, the lens that was $799 is now $949, the only thing that changed was the price. This is on ALL versions of this lens Nikon, Canon, Sigma, Sony.

UPDATE Email from the Director of Sigma Marketing

Hi Jared,

The price increase on the 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II was due to an increase in manufacturing costs and the current poor exchange rate. However, please note that the price of the OS version was decreased based on the anticipated high sales volume and in order to remain competitive in this category. That being said, the difference in price between the two versions is now only $450.00 where in the past it was nearly $800.00.

Best regards,

CM
Director of Marketing
Sigma Corporation of America

There is one good piece of news, Allen at Allens Camera 215.547.2841 still has some of the lenses at the old FroPrice. If you have been on the fence about this lens I would say jump on it now before Allen runs out of the lenses at the old price. Be sure to ask for the FroPrice and they will take care of you.

the price for all sigma lenses has riced up.
    150 to 200 € :o

so if you want to by one, do it now!

    • Dan March 8, 2011 at 8:49 am -

The Sigma 17-50 OS seems to be the same price still

  3. Heather March 7, 2011 at 3:49 pm -

Well that just…stinks. For me, anyway. Just bought a new camera and a 24-70mm 2.8 lens so I won’t be making any new lens purchases for a little while. :/

  4. deadheart March 7, 2011 at 3:59 pm -

    It’s still $814.96 on Amazon

  5. e.khattar March 7, 2011 at 3:59 pm -

in germany, still the same price :
Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG MACRO HSM : 635 Euro
Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM : 960 Euro

I want to buy one of these two lenses , but sill not able to decide between the two .
Extra 325 Euro for the OS and still without the macro that would be useful ! what do you think ? which one should i get ?

  6. Chris Bartow March 7, 2011 at 4:06 pm -

Was just about to buy the Sigma 30mm 1.4 and it’s up about $50. Now it’s the same price as the Canon 28mm 1.8.

  7. Marc S. March 7, 2011 at 4:09 pm -

    Wait what?

I bought mine for 729€ half a year ago.
A friend of mine got his last week for 598€ at Amazon.

Its the exact same Sigma HSM II.

i think it is time for a rant, that craze that’s 150.00 more then what was last year

  9. Juan March 7, 2011 at 4:41 pm -

NOOOOOO… I was saving up to buy this. might aswell hold my money for a Nikon

  10. Thomas March 7, 2011 at 4:43 pm -

A german (online) store lists it fot 598.-€ A very good price for this lens.
@e.khattar: Where did you find the OS Version for 960.-€.? This is by far the lowest price for the OS version I ever heard of.

    • e.khattar March 7, 2011 at 4:54 pm -

Digirev imported from UK or hong kong who cares ! :D
and An import handling charge already been included in the price and no further import tax/duty to pay.
      Got a d7000 + md-d11 + 50mmm 1.4 and I had no problem at all…. !

      • Russ March 7, 2011 at 6:56 pm -

The only thing about buying Nikon (imported) is Nikon will not always honour the warrenty so you need to be carefull.

  11. Harvz March 7, 2011 at 4:56 pm -

i cant see why you would by this over a canon/nikon lens when they look so much better. at the $800 price it was still a toss up and i was thinking of getting it but after seeing a review of the canon 70-200m vs sigma the canon blew it away

  12. Dawn March 7, 2011 at 6:13 pm -

    Damn you FRO!!
I was debating about buying the Canon 70-200 but didnt have the $$$$$…but because of you I just ordered the Sigma fron Allens and now can’t eat for the next month :)
    I hope I can trust you, I think I can, I think I can, I think I can…
    Cheers and ramen soup,
    Dawn

  13. Jeff March 7, 2011 at 6:13 pm -

Lucky I bought that sigma 70-200mm when it was normal.

  14. Dawn March 7, 2011 at 6:15 pm -

Bad email address on the last one…maybe cause I was so excited about the lens! (Oops, excited about the GLASS)Feel free to email me and reassure I won’t have buyers remorse!
    LOL

  15. Dawn March 7, 2011 at 6:16 pm -

Oh yes, the point? I got it for 799.00! Plus shipping and a UV filter.

  16. Russ March 7, 2011 at 6:20 pm -

Is this just an American price hike? Here in the UK that lense is either the same price it has been for ages or in some cases it has gone down in price. I see that Warehousexpress has dropped it by £62.00 and I have just noticed that DigitalRev is actually doing the OS version for £799.99 including VAT ($1296.79 USD) that is the cheapest I have seen that lens.

I know Jared reported that Canon had raised their prices worldwide and my local camer shop says to expect Nikon to do that same later in the year, I hope Sigma are not following suit!

  17. Arie March 7, 2011 at 7:27 pm -

After the horrible resell prices I got for my old Sigma lenses, I am sticking with Nikon from now on even if it takes me longer to get the lens I want.

  18. Arthur March 7, 2011 at 7:35 pm -

Wow got one back in October for $799

  19. Evan March 7, 2011 at 8:32 pm -

so the OS version is now that price too?

  20. Blancheska March 7, 2011 at 9:18 pm -

    Is $799 the FRO price?

  21. Blancheska March 7, 2011 at 9:18 pm -

    And I don’t see my prior comments…?

  22. Shannon March 7, 2011 at 9:45 pm -

That sucks. Any word on why they did this? Any changes to the lens? I guess I got lucky, mine showed up here last week.

  23. Jeff March 7, 2011 at 9:46 pm -

Great news! now i can sell my sigma 70-200 for more money. that much closer to a nikon 70-200 VR2!

  24. Adam March 7, 2011 at 9:52 pm -

Sweet….. I just bought a used one for $730. Now my resale value has gone up, should I choose to sell. Not anytime soon it is a great lens.

  25. Mike March 7, 2011 at 11:45 pm -

Why?! This is so frustrating. I guess this lens is definitely not going to happen any time soon. just have to keep saving..

  26. Daniel March 8, 2011 at 1:15 am -

I know that the price in Germany will rice up to. Sigma has canges her prices in January. In some places you still get the old price, in some you have to pay the new.

  27. Colin March 8, 2011 at 1:53 am -

Ordered mine from Adorama Sunday for 799, with the freebie filters and such… today it’s 949. Glad I pulled the trigger when I did! (UPS sez it should be here Thursday)

  28. Nick Crow March 8, 2011 at 2:00 am -

FRO!!! Sigma said the EX series lenses from now on will be weather sealed. Once the old stock is gone the new stock (same version) will have weather sealing and thus the higher price. Its only on the “pro” EX series lenses.

  29. mhmmd March 8, 2011 at 3:16 am -

this is just a smart marketing strategy ..
they saw that the market is barely active .. .
they gave it a boom by saying ” buy now or you’ll spend more later ” … i don’t think they’re gonna raise the prices after the old stock is out .. . .
    You’ll see

  30. Thomas March 8, 2011 at 4:47 am -

Got a newsletter from SIGMA some minutes ago.
They are selling this lens at 599.-€ for a limited time period.

“Für ein gelungenes “Narren-Portrait” empfehle ich Ihnen ein lichtstarkes Telezoom wie unser 70-200mm F2,8 EX DG, das wir Ihnen in diesem Moment zum Schnäppchenpreis von nur 599,- Euro im Handel anbieten. Hier heißt es: schnell zugreifen, der Vorrat ist begrenzt.”

  31. kleemy March 8, 2011 at 6:27 am -

By the way, did anybody ever compared the 1st and the 2nd Version of this Sigma on a fullformat body? I love my 1st-Version-Lens on my DeSi (D700) and wonder, whether this awesome piece of glas could be improved.
599,00 Euros is a real good price for this lens, I must say. But maybe the Version with VR is even more usefull. Imagine shooting portrait freehand for 2 or more hours. Could make your arms tired and shivering.

  32. Craig March 8, 2011 at 7:33 am -

    Jared,
This would be a great time for you to review the Tamron 70-200 2.8, it’s still affordable and it’s an AMAZING lens. The AF isn’t as fast as the Sigma, but it’s still really good for the price! I’ve never once had a problem with it, but I don’t shoot sports, I mainly do portraits and jazz concerts. I tried both lenses and preferred the Tamron over the Sigma and I think it deserves to be reviewed, especially now that the Sigma price is going to go up.

  33. perrolokostudio March 8, 2011 at 10:20 am -

I dont believe a bit, of Sigma´s response.. I bet the cheaper lens was eating on the market of the OS lens, so thats a marketing move. I say that if you where planning on getting the new sigma, forget it and get an used Nikon VR 1

    • Jared Polin March 14, 2011 at 9:40 am -

      yup

  34. Fredrik March 8, 2011 at 10:38 am -

This is not very surprising with the current USD exchange rate USD in mind.

  35. Publius March 8, 2011 at 11:33 am -

    Half-OT:
A friend considers the Sigma 120-400mm F4,5-5,6 which Jared & Greg barely touched in the last show (if I’m not mistaken).
Which version should he buy and will it worth a potential price increase (if one happens on this lens, too)?
Which other telezoom in the same price range would be an alternative for his D80? He needs something with more than 200mm and the F-stop isn’t that important on it.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

  36. Justin March 8, 2011 at 3:37 pm -

    :(

    This stinks.

Can you do a review of the tamron version Jared ?

  37. kevin March 8, 2011 at 3:48 pm -

just bought mine under the wire at 799 then price raised 3 days later, at first the wife wasnt happy that i bought it but now when i showed her Jared Polin’s comment about the price jump she wasnt mad any more.

    thanks jared

  38. Mike March 8, 2011 at 5:11 pm -

I agree, I own the Tamron 70-200 and it’s fantastic! The focusing is a little on the slower side and loud, but I’ve hardly found it a problem in actual use. Taken some great pictures with it, also it’s super sharp! Was lucky enough to get it for $600 used too. Great deal!

  39. Steve Mullis March 8, 2011 at 11:50 pm -

Jared and the gang heavily endorse a lens, price goes up. I think someone has more influence than they think.

How about some reverse psychology? Talk about how much the lens blows, price will drop and Sigma will unload their inventory at dirt-cheap prices.

Everyone wins! (except Sigma of course.)

  40. Alisdair Comb March 9, 2011 at 6:57 am -

I’d probably hold out and save a bit more towards the Canon, a $200 price jump almost seems high even if this is due to rising costs.

  41. Jeremy Griffin March 9, 2011 at 2:23 pm -

    ****PRICE ALERT*****
I dont know what just happened, but Amazon has 8 of these lenses in stock for only $750.00
    http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-70-200mm-Macro-Digital-Cameras/dp/B001044RIQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1299698596&sr=1-2

I believe Canon is more at $815.

  42. ian March 9, 2011 at 2:43 pm -

Awesome, glad I got mine a month ago…Talk about good resale value, woohoo.

  43. TroyS March 9, 2011 at 5:46 pm -

Just ordered mine today with Brandon at the Fro price. I hear the Fro made a video today with the remaining ones that are left. One of which is heading to AZ.

  44. prodigee71 March 9, 2011 at 6:06 pm -

got mine delivered today from Allen’s. I jumped on this seemed like a waste to spend and extra $150 in a couple of months when I was gonna get the lens anyway. I cant wait to try this lens out :)
I am glad I saw this post in time to get one.
Thank you Allen’s Camera for leaving the price the same, you have a new customer.

  45. Edward Nafzger March 11, 2011 at 2:33 pm -

Jared i want you to put a snif and real test of the Sigma 120-300 F2:8 os lens i am in the loop of buying it but waiting for a snif and real test thanks.
And yes on youtube nice and funny your way of doing this all.

  46. Greg March 12, 2011 at 12:51 pm -

Very unfortunate. I, like some others here, had a projected purchase in the next few months (July for me), but I’m going to have to rethink that. At $800, it was a lot to rationalize for me, a serious but still amateur photographer. At closer to %1,000, there are simply other more important purchases to make. Thanks for the heads up!

  47. Curtis Gillen March 18, 2011 at 12:19 am -

Just got this lens with a D300s and it rocks! I had used the Pentax version of this same lens, which did not impress me as it focused slower then my body driven pentax lenses, but for Nikon it is awesome. I also have the Sigma 1.4X tele converter and found it is a good combo with this lens. If you can’t afford the 70-200 Nikon VR give the Sigma a try.

An fascinating dialogue is worth comment. I think that you need to write extra on this subject, it may not be a taboo subject but typically persons are not enough to speak on such topics. To the next. Cheers
